My girl my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don’t ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through
My husband was a hardworking man
About a mile from here
His head was found in a driver’s wheel
His body never was found
The longest train that I ever saw
Was down on that New Haven line
The engine passed at half past six
The cab, it passed around nine
My girl my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don’t ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through
Where’d you get those store-bought shoes
And that dress that you wear so fine
Got my shoes from a railroad man
Got my dress from a driver in the mines
Little girl, little girl, what have I done
That you treat me so bitter and cold
I feel your hands around my neck
The hands that I used to hold
My girl my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don’t ever shine
I’m going where the cold wind blows
My girl my girl, don’t you fucking lie to me
Where the fuck did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don’t ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through
about
If I had to pick a song that first got me into Americana and music history, it's 'In The Pines' -- we're not the first band to cover it and I hope we're not the last. I first heard the Nirvana version when I was a teenager, and then learned at some point that it was based on a 1940s recording of the song by Leadbelly. This took me down the folk music rabbithole... There are so many different recordings and verses, all with a common tragic thread.
Our version is based on the Nirvana and Leadbelly ones, but played in a minor key. We also adapted some of the lyrics that are on Bill Monroe's 1952 recording, and added a few of our own words to continue the story.
